Rashford's brother deletes post aimed at Gareth Southgate after England no-show

Marcus Rashford's brother has deleted a message in which he appeared to aim a dig at Gareth Southgate following England's draw with Denmark.

The Three Lions took the lead against the Danes in their second group game of Euro 2024 on Thursday. But it was all downhill from there for Southgate's men, who quickly conceded an equaliser to Morten Hjulmand's long-range effort.

Despite Southgate throwing on Ollie Watkins, Jarrod Bowen and Eberechi Eze, England failed to break down the Danish defence. Instead, it was a largely abject display from the Three Lions.

And Dwaine Maynard, who is Rashford's brother and agent, believes that the Manchester United star was what England were missing. He posted a message on his Instagram story in which he took aim at Southgate.

On a black background, Maynard wrote: "It's hard to sit and watch when you honestly believe your man could make a difference!" The story was soon deleted off Maynard's Instagram profile.

Maynard's frustration likely stems from Southgate having snubbed Rashford when naming his squad for the Euros. The attacker endured a difficult season at United and paid the price for his poor performances.

Instead, Southgate selected Bowen, Eze, Bukayo Saka, Phil Foden, Anthony Gordon and Cole Palmer as his options out wide. But they are struggling to make an impact, with England having disappointed so far.

Southgate admitted that England's tournament had not started as he had hoped, following the Denmark draw and an unconvincing win over Serbia. But he has backed his squad to rediscover their form.

“It was clearly not what we would have hoped, we are not using the ball well enough and we have to accept if you do that you are going to suffer at times like we have tonight,” the England boss said.

“We know there is another level that we have got to find. We have played teams that are quite fluid in back threes, it's not easy to get pressure on them and we need to do that better than we have done in these two matches.

“It has been part of the problem, but not keeping the ball has also been a big part of the problem. We wanted to get Conor [Gallagher] on, we needed some energy, we needed to press better and Conor obviously does that very well.

“He’s had some moments where he has delivered what we hoped he would. We are trying some different things and at the moment we are not flowing as we would like. There is a huge amount of work [to do].

"That is evident from the two performances that we have given. We have to stay tight, we understand people will be disappointed with the performances and rightly so. We have got to make them better.”
