Something of a golfer's paradise, a village in Surrey sits on the banks of the River Wey and is home to a quaint, Riverside pub - but no one can seem to work out how to pronounce its name.
Pyrford Town sits between West Byfleet, Ripley and Wisely but unlike its neighbours, is not pronounced how it looks. The correct way of saying it is Purr-ford, which has seemed to confuse many over the years. A popular spot for London commuters due to its close proximity to Woking station that has a direct line into Waterloo and only 10 minutes away from the A3.
The village also offers stunning riverside walks and a route along the Wey Canal with great views of the countryside, locks, bridges and colourful canal boats that sit at the water's edge, according to SurreyLive. And on this walk is The Anchor pub, a gem of the village that is situated at the Pyrforf Lock overlooking the water.
Known not only for its great location and stunning views, The Anchor serves up an array of delicious food including baked camembert sharing starters, duck confit with buttery mash and red cabbage and pan seared salmon. It also sells pub classics like juicy burgers, fish and chips and sausage and mash. On Sundays, a traditional roast is is on offer with your choice of meat.
The pub is a favourite with ramblers, visitors and locals alike - with RHS Wisley botanical gardens just a short drive away. Open to all throughout the year, the award-winning horticulture paradise is perfect for all of the family and for those looking to immerse themselves in nature for the day. Known as one of the "world’s great gardens", Wisley boats an immense array of over 25,000 species and types of plants and is a centre for botanical research and learning.

Dotted with places to eat and drink and a wonderful shop full of flower and plant themed goodies, Wisley is the perfect nearby day out.
Pyrford was famously mentioned in H. G. Wells' The War of the Worlds science fiction novel as the location where a third Martian invasion cylinder landed. Although the real-life village is not really an alien landing site, one of its many open fields, wooded areas, low hills or golf courses could have provided the perfect spot for a spaceship to touch down.
Alas, it remains a a golfer's paradise with Pyrford Golf Course - boasting 23 acres of stunning surroundings and beautiful lakes - and the nearby Hoebridge Golf Centre and The Wisley Golf Club just minutes away by car. The charming little town is also home to a historic church built in 1140 AD that is located on the edge of Newark Priory, a historical landmark in the neighbouring town of Ripley.
According to property site Rightmove, homes in Pyrford, which are generally either period properties and or farmhouses, sold for an average of £724,673 last year. Some of the larger farmhouses can go for a grand £4 million while smaller detached houses, which make up most of the market in the area, usually fetch just upwards of £1 million.
