A fan has been rushed to a Berlin hospital after falling from the stands while celebrating a goal during Austria's Euro 2024 win over Poland.

The supporter fell from a mixed section of supporters during Friday's game at the Olympiastadion, according to reports. An ambulance was called and was present for around half an hour after the game had finished.

Footage from the match in the German capital showed stewards holding a tarpaulin over a gap between the stands and the pitch. The fan was swiftly transported to hospital for treatment. His condition is currently unknown. ARD presenter Alexander Bommes explained the situation.

He said: "It's gone quiet here. The Austrians were celebrating wildly. There is a more serious medical emergency. It looks like a Polish fan has fallen down the stands. We couldn't follow it closely."

The news comes after Berlin police were forced to close a fan park near the Brandenburg Gate on Friday. Storms forced organisers to move fans away from the park, only for it to reopen later in the day. Back on the pitch, Austria beat Poland 3-1 to earn their first points of the tournament.

Gernot Trauner got his side off to the perfect start ahead of Krzysztof Piątek's equaliser. Christoph Baumgartner and Marko Arnautovic scored in the second half to seal victory.

Speaking after the game, ex-Manchester United manager Ralf Rangnick said: “Since I was coach with Austria, that was the most important match and that is why I am so happy not just with the result but with the performance. We played well for long periods and controlled the second half.”

Goalscorer Baumgartner added: “The coach believed in me. He made it clear that I can make the difference in big matches. He has faith in me. The coach had a few words for me at half-time and after I scored, I was just overwhelmed. I wanted to show him that I am extremely grateful. I am extremely happy that he is still here with us.

Defeat leaves Poland on the verge of elimination pending the result of France's clash with the Netherlands in Leipzig on Friday evening. Austria will be back at the Olympiastadion on Tuesday as they round off their group stage against the Netherlands.

The stadium is set to host three more games throughout Euro 2024. It will host a round of 16 games, a quarter-final and the final of the tournament. The showpiece will take place on Sunday 14 July.
