Bayern Munich president Herbert Hainer has confirmed that the club are in "very good" talks with Ralf Rangnick.

Rangnick, 65, is currently in charge of the Austrian national team and preparing for the European Championships after breezing through qualifying. That's his first role since leaving Manchester United following a torrid six months as interim manager, but Bayern are willing to put their faith in him as they replace Thomas Tuchel.

The German giants have offered him a contract until 2027 according to multiple reports, and although Rangnick hasn't signed off on the deal, multiple outlets say that he wants the job. The former Schalke, Hoffenheim and RB Leipzig boss has held productive discussions with the Bayern hierarchy.

"We are in good talks with Ralf but we have to wait a few more days," Hainer told AZ Munich after their thrilling 2-2 draw at home to Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-finals on Tuesday. "He is an excellent expert on the football scene. If it happens, he's a very good choice."

Rangnick would take over from Tuchel after Austria end their run at Euro 2024. Germany's southerly neighbours, who've lost just one of their last 14 games, have been drawn in Group D alongside France, the Netherlands and Poland.

Rangnick revealed last week that he'd spoken to Bayern chiefs but insisted that his decision won't be driven by money.

"That doesn't matter to me at all," the 65-year-old said. "For me it's about other things: can I make a difference? Is there a chance of developing a team and being successful?

"My focus is on the Austrian national team. We are completely focused on the European Championship."

The Bayern fan base isn't fully convinced about Rangnick, though, with a petition to keep Tuchel in charge gaining 12,000 signatures before Saturday's 2-1 win against Eintracht Frankfurt.

Ex- Chelsea boss Tuchel, who failed to retain the Bundesliga title this season, responded by saying: "Even though this topic is good for me when [the fans] wish you to stay, it's not something that is a priority.

"It isn't allowed to be a priority. In the next 11 days it's only about football, nothing else. Whether it's pleasant or unpleasant, I don't allow myself to be influenced by it."
