The boss of Manchester Airport issued a grovelling apology to passengers hit by huge delays and flight cancellations on Sunday saying: “I couldn't be more sorry”.
Thousands of passengers - heading overseas for their holiday - saw their break away cancelled or delayed after a “power spike” caused flight mayhem.
Huge queues snaked around the airport after terminals one and two were severely affected. Flights were cancelled “until further notice,” planes diverted and baggage reclaim left at a standstill.
Holiday makers were warned to stay away as power was restored and they battled to clear the backlog. The airport said it was "working to get those passengers already at the airport onto flights as soon as possible".
But thousands already inside the airport faced significant delays and possible cancellations. And a number of arriving flights were diverted to other airports, including Etihad Airways flight from Abu Dhabi Zayed International Airport which was sent to Birmingham.

“First of all an apology, my sincere apologies, personal apologies to every single passenger who has been impacted by what’s gone on at Manchester airport today. There was a big power spike in our electrical system due to a failure early on this morning and it damaged some really key equipment for our departure security and departures baggage systems.
“So that's meant that terminal one and terminal two have not been able to depart aircraft today. As a result we have not had those aircraft be able to land arrivals as there is no space to park those aircraft on the airfield…” He thanked his team for doing a “very difficult job” in “very difficult circumstances.”
“I couldn’t be more sorry, “ he finished before adding “the good news” which is they expect to be “back to normal operations tomorrow.’ A statement said earlier that “a major power cut” had caused widespread disruption.
Someone quipped back: “Bet there’s no power outage issues with those machines that charge you £5 to drop someone off at Manchester Airport…” Another said on X, formerly Twitter, “Got up at 2.30am for a 3.30am taxi to Manchester Airport for 4.30am. Stood outside terminal for over four hours before flight and holiday was cancelled. Genuine shambles of a gaff.”
