TRAVELLERS can make their way around one of the most popular European holiday destinations very affordably this summer, after a train operator launched a new ticket sale.

Some tickets are as low as €7 which works out at not much more than a fiver, making it easy and cheap to see as much of the country as possible.

Spain's state railway operator Renfe has launched the new 'Superprecios' fares this summer.

They allow affordable travel between various destinations from July 22 until September 8.

The aim of the campaign is to get more people travelling by train, reducing emissions from cars and easing pressure on roads created during the summer months created by the influx of tourists.

Tickets were launched yesterday (Monday June 24) and are available to purchase on the Renfe website, as well as from stations until July 1.

The tickets will be valid on the high speed AVE and Avlo services and Larga Distancia trains, with the cheaper fares available of some of the budget Avlo services.

Currently on sale, are tickets from €18 (£15) to travel from Madrid to Seville, Granada, Algeciras and Almeria.

Meanwhile, tickets from the Spanish capital to Malaga and Huelva are available for €24 (£20) and trips from Madrid to Cadiz will start at €34 (£28).

Passengers will also be able to move between Madrid and Valencia from €14 (£11), while routes between Madrid and Zaragoza, Pamplona, Logroño and Burgos will be available from €15 (£12).

Elsewhere, tickets on routes between Madrid and Barcelona, Lleida and Camp de Tarragona, Seville, Granada, Algeciras, Almeria and Extremadura are all on sale from €18 (£15).

The rail company explained that its daily circulation of trains (passenger and freight) "prevents the emission of 4.1 million tons of CO2 each year".

They added: "Renfe has the 'Carbon Neutral' certification granted by AENOR for all our electric trains, both passenger and freight, which highlights the commitment to sustainability."

The cheap tickets are available to all passengers throughout the summer, making it a great way to explore the cities of Spain this year.

Three of the country's cities featured on Travel Supermarket's list of best European city break destinations to visit this year.

They include Madrid, Barcelona and Seville where tourists are recommended to "allow some time to sample some of the city’s world-famous tapas in a traditional bar or two, before watching a flamenco show until the small hours".

The price of a pint in Seville is around £2.14, while Barcelona isn't much more expensive at £2.50.

Madrid has the most expensive beers from the three destinations, but it is still hardly breaking the bank, with a pint costing around £2.75.

Return flights to Spain aren't too expensive either, starting around £56, with budget airlines like Ryanair, easyJet and Iberia Express all linking the UK to the popular holiday spot.

Spain is the most popular travel destination for Brits, with close to 18 million travellers from the UK heading there in 2023.

Meanwhile, this Spanish holiday town with hidden coves has seen a surge in interest from holidaymakers.
