Things are hotting up this week as Britain is bathed in sunshine with some spots hitting 31C.

A heatwave sweeps in today to lift the Monday blues and looks like hanging around until Thursday.

But experts also issued a health warning for almost the whole country due to the scorching temperatures, with vulnerable people being urged to stay indoors and drink plenty of water. UK Health Security Agency chiefs said there is an increased risk of death and pressure on the NHS.

Met Office senior meteorologist Liam Eslick said: “Temperatures will increase through the week, peaking on Wednesday and Thursday with highs of 30-31C in the South East.

“Monday sees a mostly dry day with plenty of very warm sunny spells.”

Tomorrow will be a bit fresher in parts with some showers. Thursday may bring more rain and possibly thunder but it will still be around 31C.

And Mr Eslick said that by next weekend temperatures will be back to June averages of 18-19C. The NHS warn babies and females over 75, and the elderly who live on their own or in a care home are most vulnerable to the effects of heatwaves.

They are urged to take extra precautions in the high temperatures.
