Hungary boss Marco Rossi said his forward Barnabas Varga suffered a fractures to his face and a concussion against Scotland, but added that he's thankful the Ferencvaros star is "healthy" after the worrying incident.
Varga was caught by Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn midway through the second half of the Group A clash in Stuttgart, with Hungary players looking visibly distressed as he lay on the turf.
Captain Dominik Szoboszlai and his team-mates angrily urged medical staff to get onto the pitch quicker as Varga was in need of treatment, and when the medics eventually arrived they held up screens to protect him from the view of spectators.
Hungary ended up winning the game and knocking Scotland out thanks to substitute Kevin Csoboth's strike in the 10th minute of injury-time, and after the game it was quickly confirmed that Varga was in a stable condition.
“What I heard from the players is that Barney looked unconscious," said Rossi. "Everybody was really worried about his condition, and worried that the doctors arrived a bit late. Probably they didn’t realise it was a dangerous situation.
Former Celtic star slams Scottish Premiership after making January move to MLS“We can say now that Barney is not under any kind of risks. Probably he will be operated on in the coming hours because he suffered a fracture here [points to cheek], but he’s healthy.
“Of course if we will go through the competition he will not be any more part of the team.”
Man of the match Roland Sallai added: “It was a terrible moment to see him like that. He’ll have to go tough a minor operation, but we cross our fingers for him that he can return. Naturally it was a terrible incident. Of course we were fighting for him in the remaining minutes and this win is dedicated to him.”
