Freelance photographer Ian Longthorne saw the aftermath of the prang as he walked along a public footpath on his way back from lunch.

Cops said there is "currently no evidence to suggest there was any intention to harm anyone".

He told The Sun: “A small to midsize white car had gone into some bollards at the main entrance to Chequers.

“We saw an ambulance car, a fire engine and an unmarked police car on blue lights come speeding past.

“I only saw the car involved a few hours after the incident at around 2.30pm. But it looked to be pretty damaged.”

An eyewitness said: “There was a crash at Rishi Sunak’s place. Police were all over it and blocking the entrance off.”

“A white Volkswagen GTI smashed into a bollard before crashing into the main gate.

“I saw it just before 1pm. But when I came back the roof of the car had been cut open.

“There was no one in the car and the keys were still in it. It looked like someone had possibly done it deliberately.”

An ambulance and fire engine are also believed to have been called to the incident at around 12.30pm
