Brits are set to bake this week as a much-anticipated spell of hot weather is set to strike.

After a washout spring, the UK will sizzle this week with temperatures projected to hit the 31C mark. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued a yellow alert lasting until Thursday afternoon for health risks over the heat.

All regions except for the North East are included in the warning, with particular concerns for the elderly and vulnerable who are risk of heat exhaustion and heatstroke. The Met Office says the UK will see mostly dry weather this week, with temperatures well into the 20C range.

The South East and Midlands are set to see the warmest temperatures, according to forecasts, with MetDesk data on WXCharts revealing average temperatures across the country hitting the 29C mark on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons. Met Office meteorologist Liam Eslick meanwhile said Wednesday was likely to be the warmest day, with highs of 30C in the South East.

According to WXCharts, temperatures will peak in the UK on Wednesday at 3pm and later at 6pm, as well at again at 3pm on Thursday. The latter may be hit or miss, however, depending on where you are in the UK.

Conditions in western Scotland and Northern Ireland will become cloudy on Tuesday, forecasters say, with the potential for some showers across the North which could turn thundery. Mr Eslick said Thursday would see a mixed bag, with the possibility of an “odd thunderstorm for some”.

The UK-wide forecast on the Met Office site reveals the South West was in for some showers on Thursday. The service said: "Cloudy and cool in the northeast on Wednesday. Warm, or hot sunshine elsewhere. Showers possible in the southwest. Rain likely moving east on Thursday. Turning brighter, showery, fresher for Friday."

Temperatures on Thursday are expected to remain “widely warm” with some areas seeing highs of up to 31C. Festival-goers heading to Glastonbury this weekend however may have to check back in a few days for better clarity on this weekend's forecast.

Currently, the Met Office is projecting temperatures to cool slightly by the end of the week, but said "there remains at first, a small risk that these conditions could linger for a time in the south". Around 210,000 people are set to flock to Worthy Farm in Somerset for the UK's biggest music festival, headlined this year by Dua Lipa and Coldplay.
