Federal officials have officially removed the shiny 6-foot-4 monolith that mysteriously appeared in the Mojave desert, Las Vegas last weekend.
Law enforcement learned about the strange metal monolith through a police search and rescue team and discovered the mirrored object near Gass Peak in the vast Desert National Wildlife Refuge of the Mojave Desert.
Christa Weise, acting manager of the National Wildlife Refuge confirmed that the monolith had been removed which they thought posed a "danger to humans and the environment."
The department said it “discourages anyone from venturing off marked trails or leaving objects and items behind. This poses a danger to you and the environment."

My £15k Kia was driven 300 miles after I left it with airport parking firmPhotos on social media showed that the object left a "large indent" in the ground because the rebar was deeply buried in the dirt and rocks. It is unknown whether the federal authorities have opened a criminal investigation but revealed that the object was kept at a secret location while the authorities figured out the "best way to dispose or store the massive structure."
The monolith was made out of a reflective sheet of metal, and was molded into a prism and secured with rebar and concrete. Its weekend discovery and swift removal revived a pandemic-era mystery reminiscent of the monoliths inspired by the Stanley Kubrick movie “2001: A Space Odyssey” that appeared worldwide.
Last weekend, Las Vegas authorities shared an image of the discovery on X (formerly Twitter ), which read: "We see a lot of weird things when people go hiking like not being prepared for the weather, not bringing enough water... but check this out!
"Over the weekend, (LV Search and Rescue) spotted this mysterious monolith near Gass Peak north of the valley." The mysterious appearance is not the latest discovery but there has been a string of such encounters in the past few years across the globe since 2020. The first such occurrence was a 12-foot-tall metal monolith which was discovered deep in the desert in Utah in November 2020.
However, it has been confirmed by Utah’s Department of Public Safety that "this thing is not from another world " during its first sighting. Since then the appearances have occurred in Romania, central California, and in downtown Las Vegas on Fremont Street, and the latest in Wales in March 2024.
Richard Haynes, who took photographs of the Welsh sighting while running on Hay Bluff, told WalesOnline: “I went off towards Hay Bluff towards where the trig point is and I looked over to my right. I thought it looked a bit bizarre and might be a scientific media research thing collecting rainwater.
“But then realised it was way too tall and strange for that. Then I went up to it and it was about 10-foot-tall at least and triangular, definitely stainless steel. It was hollow and I imagine pretty light. Light enough for two people to carry it up and plant it in the ground.”
