Carol Vorderman says the disappearance of teenager Jay Slater has made her reflect on the time she once went missing.
The TV star struggled so much following the death of her longtime friend and co-presenter Richard Whiteley that she made a decision to run away. After experiencing so much grief in the public eye, Carol says she just got in her car and put her foot down in a desperate bid to escape.
The emotional telly favourite told LBC that she just locked herself away for days and days and didn't communicate with anyone amid the hunt for the British 19-year-old in Tenerife. Now into the eighth day of the search involving mountain rescue teams, local police, the Civil Guard and fire crews, there are no clear clues over what has happened.
Explaining her struggle, she heartbreakingly told the radio programme: “Richard Whiteley died, and he died quite suddenly. Every day people would talk to me about him, even though I wasn’t with him. There was a great love between us, but I couldn’t cope, I just couldn’t cope."
Explaining that her children were staying with her ex husband at the time, she went on: “I couldn’t cope with being in the public eye, I just didn’t know what to do. I just had to disappear. I didn’t want anyone I knew around me, I just got in my car and I drove. I eventually found a hotel and I didn’t have anything with me.
Carol Vorderman reveals secret link to Taskmaster’s Alex Horne ahead of debut"I had my purse, and just locked myself away then, switch my phone off, all of that. I just stayed in that room, just to get my thoughts together really. So I do understand when people say that that’s their only option, I really do. There’s no shame about it, that’s why I’m telling this story for the first time. There’s no shame, everyone has those moments, I believe, at some point."
Much-loved Richard, 61, passed away suddenly following heart complications after first being admitted to Leeds Royal Infirmary with pneumonia back in May 2005. The Pride of Britain host, 63, shot to fame in 1982 when she joined Channel 4's Countdown and she presented the show with Richard when it first launched, spending 23 years together up until 2005 when he sadly died.
Carol previously told Piers Morgan about how much she misses him: "He was more than just nice, he was funny, funny, funny. Every time we were in studio together I would cry laughing. He was just a joy to be with and I loved him. Not in that way, just a genuine, pure thing."
The host then asked her: If you hadn't seen your career explode at the time that it did, do you think would have split up?" She said: "Probably not. I think it did have an influence, yes. Probably we would be together." Carol continued working on Countdown for a further three years after his death but she eventually left when she and Channel 4 failed to agree terms on a new contract.
