Barnabas Varga is set to undergo surgery after breaking several bones in his face in the sickening collision which knocked him unconscious.

The Hungary star was injured when he was caught in the face by Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn as he came to try and punch a cross away during Hungary’s win on Sunday night. The severity of the injury was immediately clear, with the referee stopping the game and Varga’s team-mates crowding around him.

Varga was put into the recovery position before Dominik Szoboszlai helped the medical staff bring on a stretcher. Hungary’s players formed a ring around him and sheets were brought onto the field to ensure his privacy during treatment.

He was lifted off the field to a round of applause and taken to a hospital in Stuttgart in a stable condition. And on Monday morning, the Hungary FA confirmed that Varga had sustained some nasty injuries to his face and a concussion in the collision.

"Several bones in Barnabas Varga's face were broken during the collision during the match, and he also suffered a concussion," they said in a statement. "The Ferencvaros striker is most likely to undergo surgery. He spends the night in the hospital in Stuttgart. The whole team is rooting for him!"

Hungary won the game 1-0 courtesy of Kevin Csoboth’s goal on the counter-attack in the 10th minute of added time. They dedicated the win to their injured team-mate before manager Marco Rossi explained what had happened.

“What I heard from the players is that Barney looked unconscious," said Rossi. "Everybody was really worried about his condition and worried that the doctors arrived a bit late. Probably they didn’t realise it was a dangerous situation.

“We can say now that Barney is not under any kind of risk. Probably he will be operated on in the coming hours because he suffered a fracture here [points to cheek], but he’s healthy. Of course, if we will go through the competition he will not be any more part of the team.”

Varga has been sent messages of support from his team-mates. Writing on Instagram, Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez said: “Proud of everyone and thankful for the support in the stadium and the country! Our brother will be all right because he is strong.”

Midfielder Roland Sallai said: “It was a terrible moment to see him like that. He’ll have to go through a minor operation, but we cross our fingers for him that he can return. Naturally, it was a terrible incident. Of course, we were fighting for him in the remaining minutes and this win is dedicated to him.”
