Matthew Fitzpatrick jokingly asked why he even bothers with golf following Scottie Scheffler's sixth PGA Tour triumph in 2024.

The current Masters champion earned a whopping £2.85million payout after defeating Tom Kim in a thrilling finish at the Travelers Championship on Sunday (June 23).

The result was the latest in a slew of victories for the 28-year-old, who recorded his sixth PGA Tour win in just 10 starts. That level of dominance led to a five-word statement from 2022 US Open Matthew Fitzpatrick on X, which just about summed up Scheffler's grip over the rest of his competitors.

Scheffler has won the Arnold Palmer Invitational, The Players Championship, The Masters, RBC Heritage and the Memorial already this season. And, responding to a post measuring Scheffler's dominance since switching to a mallet putter, Fitzpatrick joked: "We do we even bother." Presumably meaning "why do we even bother," the English completed his tweet with a laughing and crying emoji.

Fans enjoyed Fitzpatrick's tongue in cheek jibe with one X user replying: "Decent prize money for 2nd I suppose..." Another added: "As Kisner says, there's a lot of dough for a top 20".

The two-time major winner became the first player since Arnold Palmer in 1962 to win six times before July on the PGA Tour with his success at the weekend. As a result, he has extended his reign as world number one, as well as his ranking in the FedExCup standings.

After Sunday's victory, Scheffler paid tribute to Kim, 22, as he said: "It has been a great season, I've been fortunate to come away with some wins and it has been a lot of fun. Tom played his heart out today. He's a great player, great champion and it was fun battling with him today".

The South Korean golfer has earned a reputation as one of the most promising players on the Tour following his runner-up performance in The Open Championship last year. While he didn't claim the title in Connecticut, he took home a considerable £1.7million in prize money.

Scheffler is in red-hot form heading into The Open Championship at Troon next month. Barring any issues between now and then, he'll begin the tournament as the bookies' favourite, with Rory McIlroy also likely to be high up in the betting.
