Rebecca Elsdon is an advanced skin specialist and the owner of the health clinic Re/Skin in Sheffield, England.

She has over 20 years of experience in the industry taking both a scientific and holistic approach.

Speaking to The U.S. Sun, she shared how to maintain a youthful appearance.

BANISH UNDER-EYE BAGS

Elsdon said good skincare needs to be combined with lifestyle habits to reduce the appearance of under-eye bags.

She shared the best home remedy for smoothing the skin.

“Applying cold compresses can decrease swelling while using eye creams containing caffeine, retinol, or peptides can tighten the skin and improve elasticity,” she said.

“Ensuring adequate sleep, reducing salt intake, and staying hydrated also play crucial roles in minimizing under-eye puffiness.”

DIMINISH DARK CIRCLES

Genetics, health, and lifestyle factors such as a lack of sleep, smoking, sun exposure, and a poor diet can cause dark circles.

“The skin in this area is very thin, making blood vessels and pigmentation more visible,” Elsdon said.

“The under-eye area is also relatively immobile, leading to slower circulation. This causes blood to pool in the capillaries, making the area appear darker.”

She said dark circles can be brightened using eye creams that contain ingredients such as vitamin C, kojic acid, or niacinamide to lighten hyperpigmentation.

However, applying topical beauty products isn’t the only habit to embrace for an even complexion.

“Additionally, ensuring consistent sun protection, and maintaining a healthy sleep routine can significantly help,” she said.

“Sometimes, incorporating color-correcting concealers can also provide an immediate brightening effect.”

She said that treatments like skin boosters and mesotherapy may be beneficial for treating “challenging” hereditary dark circles.

“Regular consultations with a skin specialist can help tailor a skincare routine to your specific needs, ensuring the best results for your skin's health and appearance” she added.

SMOOTH WRINKLES

Elsdon revealed there is a selection of powerful ingredients that can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles as an alternative to cosmetic injections.

Among them is retinoids which can promote cell turnover and collagen production.

Daily protection from UV will help to prevent further lines.

“Antioxidants like vitamin C can protect against environmental damage, while peptides support skin structure by encouraging skin regeneration,” she said.

“Regular use of hyaluronic acid can plump the skin, and consistent hydration is key.

“Of course daily protection from UV will help to prevent further lines.

"Microneedling and non-invasive laser treatments are also excellent options.”

She said many of these anti-aging ingredients are also in makeup products.

“Look for foundations and primers containing hyaluronic acid for hydration, peptides for skin repair, and antioxidants like vitamins C and E to combat free radicals,” she said.

“Some products also include SPF to protect against UV damage, further preventing signs of aging.

“However don’t rely on the spf in your foundation alone, you will need a separate product dedicated to UV protection”
