Zara Tindall spent more than an hour in hospital visiting her mum, the Princess Royal, after she was injured by a horse over the weekend and suffered a concussion.

Princess Anne was injured while walking round her Gatcombe Park estate home in Gloucestershire on Sunday. She is understood to have been struck by a horse and was taken to Southmead Hospital in Bristol where the 73-year-old is expected to stay for the rest of the week.

Earlier today Zara Tindall arrived to visit her ailing mother after the incident at the weekend. She left after an hour and smiled as she got into a Mercedes outside the main entrance and was driven away shortly before 5.30pm. The Princess Royal’s husband, Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence, had earlier stayed for a near two-hour visit today. As he left, he told reporters: “She's doing fine, slow but sure.

“She is recovering well, thank you. We are both profoundly grateful to the medical team and hospital support staff for their expert care - and to the emergency services who were all so wonderful at the scene. We are both deeply touched by all the kind messages we have received from so many people near and far. It means a great deal.”

Asked if he had taken anything for the princess, Sir Tim said: "Just a few little treats from home." The princess continues to be awake and conscious while she is receiving medical care in hospital, royal sources said. She was due to visit Canada at the end of this week but the visit will now be postponed on doctors’ advice as she will not be able to fly.

Anne was also not able to take part in the Japanese State Visit today attended by several members of the royal family including the King and Queen. Buckingham Palace has declined to confirm whether Anne was alone or had a chaperone while out walking when the incident occurred.

A spokesperson said yesterday: "The Princess Royal sustained minor injuries and concussion following an incident on the Gatcombe Park estate yesterday evening. Her Royal Highness remains in Southmead Hospital, Bristol, as a precautionary measure for observation and is expected to make a full and swift recovery. The King has been kept closely informed and joins the whole in sending his fondest love and well-wishes to The Princess for a speedy recovery."

The palace added Her Royal Highness is recovering well, is in a comfortable condition and is being kept in hospital as a precautionary measure for further observation. She is receiving "expert" care and will stay at the hospital until her medical team advises otherwise. On Monday Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer sent her their best wishes for a speedy recovery.
