With the publicity of her new solo album in full swing, Perrie Edwards has been forced to answer questions about the inspiration for her tracks.

And now it has come to light that one of the songs could be centred around her fallout with ex-Little Mix bandmate, Jesy Nelson. The 30-year-old mum of one, who is engaged to footballer Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, claimed that the song is drenched in so much emotion, it often makes her cry. The group, formed on the back of X Factor, had been together for a decade until Jesy sensationally quit in 2020 - and the remaining members Leigh-Ann Pinnock, Jade Thirwell and Perrie have not spoken to her since.

In a recent interview, Perrie said, without naming Jesy: "There’s a friendship that I no longer have. I wrote a song about that. That song – I can’t even listen to it without crying. It is about them and how we didn’t see eye-to-eye. It’s a really sad song. We don’t talk any more." Speaking on the Zach Sang Show in America, she added: "They were a big part of my life so it’s sad how it all ended up."

Asked if there was a chance she could make up with the unnamed friend, she continued: "I’m open to it. I don’t know if they would be after they hear the song." Back in 2021, when on the Graham Norton Show, Jesy spoke about her fractured relationship with the band. She said: "We’re not talking any more. It is sad but honestly, there is no bad blood from my side, and I still love them to pieces and genuinely wish them all the best. I loved my time with them, and we’ve got the most incredible memories together but it’s just one of those things which needs to take time, so who knows? To me, they are still the ‘sickest’ girl band in the world."

At that time, the remaining trio waded in on the accusations of Jesy blackfishing in her music video Boyz. The term is used to accuse someone of pretending to be black or of mixed-race origin. Speaking about Jesy's accusations, Jade said at the time: "We’ve dealt with it in the best way that we know how, and got each other through it. One thing we will clarify regarding the blackfishing situation is that Jesy was approached by the group in a very friendly, educational manner."

She added: "Capitalising on aspects of Blackness without having to endure the daily realities of the Black experience is problematic and harmful to people of colour. We think it’s absolutely not okay to use harmful stereotypes. There’s so much to say on that subject that it’s hard to sum up in a sound bite." Keen to defend her music video, Jesy responded to the claims on Instagram Live, she said: "My intention is never to offend people of colour with this video and my song."

She continued: "When I was in the video with [US rapper Nicki Minaj ], I didn't even have any fake tan on. I'd been in Antigua prior to that for three weeks. I'm just really lucky that as a white girl, when I'm in the sun I tan so dark. My hair's naturally curly, I've always had curly hair. I wanted to get a wig that emulated the same texture as my hair, I genuinely didn't think I was doing anything wrong."
