Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York has shared a candid insight into royal family life and the key to supporting each other during taxing times, as she made a veiled reference to the ongoing friction taking place within the royal ranks.

Speaking to PEOPLE on the 2024 amFar Gala red carpet at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, the 64 year old royal opened up about family togetherness as she told the publication that: "I think family unity is key… I think the key to life is that we all support each other.”

The Duchess then added: "And also forgiveness is a great thing. I think forgiveness of yourself, and forgiveness of others.”

The comments came as Sarah was asked if she had been able to offer support King Charles 75, and Princess of Wales, 42, amid their cancer diagnoses earlier this year. Both royals revealed back that they were undergoing treatment for undisclosed forms of cancer, with Charles undergoing treatment in February and Kate in March.

Although both are still actively engaged in treatment, King Charles recently returned to public-facing duties, much to the delight of royal fans, meanwhile Kate has remained outside of the spotlight as she recuperates at home. Her husband Prince William has however told the public she is “doing well” in the latest update to her health earlier this month.

Fergie herself also recently experienced a health scare when she too was diagnosed with both skin and breast cancer. However, following a mastectomy she is now once again doing very well and by her own admission has “put cancer in the corner.”

"I think a lot of people get very frightened to talk about these things," the Duchess of York added. "I'm very happy with my mastectomy and my breasts and just to talk about it.”

While the royal family have been undergoing their own health tribulations here in the UK, tensions with King Charles’ youngest son Prince Harry remain notably strained after the Duke recently rejected an invitation to stay at a royal residence during his trip to England.

Prince Harry made a brief visit to the UK earlier this month to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games but reportedly turned down an invite by King Charles to stay at a royal residence while in the country.

Instead, Harry opted to stay at a hotel in London and his choice left the Palace "blindsided", royal biographer and editor-in-chief of Majesty Magazine, Ingrid Seward told The Mirror. According to a report in The Telegraph, Harry rejected his father's invitation due to security concerns.

The perceived ‘snub’ also comes in the wake of a tense year for royal relations after Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle levelled several criticisms towards the royal family both in their Netflix documentary and in his memoir Spare.
