Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence the Princess Royal was recovering slowly as he left a Bristol hospital after visiting his wife.

Sir Tim emerged from the main Brunel building at Southmead Hospital just before 2pm, after spending two-and-a-half hours with the Princess Royal. Asked whether Anne would be leaving hospital on Wednesday, he said: “She’ll be out when she’s ready”.

Anne was taken to hospital on Sunday night after suffering injuries and concussion in an incident understood to have been caused by horses at Gatcombe Park estate. A statement issued by Buckingham Palace on Monday said she had suffered head injuries, but did not confirm the cause of them.

Sir Tim's comment on Wednesday was the first update on her health following the statement on Monday. It came after the Princess's daughter Zara Tindall was seen visiting the hospital on Tuesday.

The 73-year-old is said to be doing fine and keen to get back on her feet, although several engagements she was due to undertake were cancelled in the wake of her injuries. It is believed Anne, a skilled horsewoman who became the first royal to compete in the Olympics when she took part in the 1976 Montreal games, was kicked by a horse on the estate in Gloucestershire on Sunday.

"The King has been kept closely informed and joins the whole Royal Family in sending his fondest love and well-wishes to the princess for a speedy recovery." The Palace added: "Her Royal Highness is receiving appropriate expert care. No further details are being shared at this stage. Her Royal Highness will remain in Southmead Hospital unless or until her medical team advise otherwise."

Anne will now miss several engagements this week, including the state banquet for the Japanese State Visit on Tuesday and a visit to Canada. A Palace spokesman said on Monday: "On doctors' advice, Her Royal Highness's engagements for the week ahead will be postponed.
