Hungary forward Barnabas Varga has been released from hospital after having surgery to repair multiple broken bones in his face.

Varga, 29, collided with Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn during their sides' Euro 2024 clash on Monday in which the Hungarians snatched a 1-0 win deep into injury time. An additional 10 minutes were played in Stuttgart because of Varga's worrying injury and the scenes that followed.

The Ferencvaros striker was rushed to hospital after being knocked unconscious as a result of his collision with Gunn. Varga was quickly surrounded by his team-mates and sheets were put up to protect him from view.

Fortunately, Hungary manager Marco Rossi confirmed shortly after the game that Varga's life wasn't at risk. Now fans have received even better news, with the 29-year-old being discharged from hospital.

During his three-night stay, Varga was pictured alongside his girlfriend, Laura Skrapits, members of Hungary's coaching staff and his team-mates. The 13-capped international, who's scored an impressive seven goals for his country, was seen leaving hospital in Stuttgart with bandages on his face while wearing a pair of sunglasses.

In a statement, Ferencvaros confirmed: "Barnabas Varga is back at home!" The Hungarian FA added: "Barnabas Varga was released from the Stuttgart hospital this morning and is currently recovering at home in Hungary."

Ferencvaros' club doctor, Gergely Panics, even came to visit the hospital and advised on the surgery. Varga's father told Hungarian news outlet Magyar Nemzet: "Barni suffered a concussion during the collision and lost consciousness.

"By the time he reached the ambulance, he had already regained consciousness, after which he was taken to the clinic in Stuttgart, where, after the examination, a therapeutic plan was drawn up, according to which he would be operated on.

"Our striker suffered multiple facial skull fractures, several smaller and larger bones were broken in his face, and some were even dislocated. After the operation, he will be kept in for two days. If everything goes well, he will be released on Wednesday."

Varga now hopes to watch Hungary continue their Euro 2024 campaign, but they face an anxious wait to learn if their three points and minus three goal difference will be enough to qualify for the last 16. Hungary need to finish as one of the four best third-placed teams among the tournament's six groups.

Croatia are already confirmed to be one of the two unfortunate teams but if the Czech Republic beat Turkey on Wednesday night, then Hungary will also head home.
