Kevin Costner has revealed Prince William confirmed a rumour about his late mother Princess Diana was true during a private chat with him.
The 69-year-old Oscar-winning actor is famous for appearing in movies like Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Dances With Wolves and The Untouchables – but in the Nineties he was best known for starring opposite singing legend Whitney Houston in the hit film The Bodyguard.
Fans might not know this, but there was once going to be a Bodyguard 2 – and Princess Diana was set to star in it alongside Kevin. But when she tragically died in a car accident in August 1997 at the age of just 36, it was understandably scrapped.
Speaking about his bond with the princess for the first time, Kevin shared how Diana – who he was introduced to by the Duchess of York, Sarah Ferguson – was “very sweet” when they met. And he revealed she was very keen on doing a kissing scene with him in the then-upcoming movie.
Sharing details about the time they met, Kevin said in a radio interview on America’s The Howard Stern Show that Diana felt her “life was about to change” had she gone on to star in the film. He said: “I didn’t really go into depth with it, but I thought I understood what she was saying. She was very sweet.”
Meghan Markle 'to unleash her own memoirs' as Prince Harry's drops next weekHe said it was about a year after Diana passed away that it leaked out they had been planning on doing Bodyguard 2 together – and claimed this didn’t go down well with the royal family at the time.
Claiming they “kind of turned on me a little bit”, Kevin said “it actually got kind of ugly” to the point where he even reached out to the royals, despite advice from Fergie not to. Though we don’t know how they reacted then, it seems things are fine with the younger royals now – particularly Diana’s eldest son and future king, Prince William.
In a new interview with PEOPLE magazine, Kevin revealed William actually requested to speak to him privately a few years back and it was a meeting too good to turn down. Kevin recalled: “I happened to be in England and I got this message that the prince would love to talk. And I said, ‘What?’ and then I went, ‘Okay.’”
William then confirmed his late mum had a secret crush. Continuing the story, Kevin said: “We met in this room and it was just us. He walked up and we shook hands. The first line out of his was, ‘You know, my mum kind of fancied you.’ While he stopped short of revealing any more details of the private conversation, a flattered Kevin called William “quite a young man” and said he was left with “such fond memories of who he was, how I was approached and what we walked about”.
