As England advance further into Euro 2024, we've taken a look back at another time they took on Slovakia.

The Three Lions will face them in the round of 16 today as they look to try and advance to the quarter-finals of the tournament in Germany. One of the few other times that England have played Slovakia was back in 2016 for a World Cup qualifier.

At the time, Sam Allardyce had just been put in charge of the squad in place of Roy Hodgson and he was looking to bring glory back to the national side - which ended up going completely the opposite direction in his 67 days in charge.

He only managed that one game and was replaced by the current coach Gareth Southgate - who has been in charge of the squad for an impressive 98 matches. Here, we look back at the squad that started that nervy 1-0 win over Slovakia and see where they are now.

Joe Hart

Joe Hart was the starting goalkeeper for England from 2010 until 2017 and was also the solid number one for Manchester City until Pep Guardiola took charge of the team.

In the initial match in 2016, Hart didn't have much to do and had quite a quiet night - aside from one "poor clearance" that excited the Slovakian fans, reports BBC Sport.

Now, the English goalkeeper has just retired from the sport after three successful seasons with Celtic - winning three league titles, two League Cups and two Scottish Cups during his time up north.

Kyle Walker was the starting right-back for Allardyce and was already spending the majority of the match attacking instead of defending.

Now, he is a mainstay in the England squad and is renowned for his speed and prowess on the right side of the pitch. Walker left Tottenham after this qualifying campaign and joined Manchester City in a £25million deal - which is where he plays his club football now.

Walker has been part of an England squad that were runners up in Euro 2020 and reached the quarter finals of the 2022 World Cup. He still regularly starts for England and will be an easy choice at full-back for Southgate in this year's Slovakia game.

Gary Cahill

Gary Cahill was a stalwart at centre-half for Chelsea at the time of the Slovakia match and won two league titles, one Champions League, two FA Cups, one League Cup and two Europa League trophies.

He had a relatively simple night against Slovakia in 2016 but is now retired from professional football. He moved from Chelsea to Crystal Palace and then to Bournemouth, before leaving the club and announcing his retirement back in 2022.

His last appearance for England was in 2018 in a 1-0 group stage defeat to Belgium at the World Cup, and spent the rest of the tournament on the bench before the squad exited in the semi finals in a 2-1 defeat in extra-time to Croatia.

John Stones

John Stones showed his ability to head further upfield from the back four in the Slovakia game in 2016 and has continued this journey in his impressive form with City.

Stones moved from Everton to the Etihad in the summer of 2016 and has been there ever since under the guidance of Guardiola. He has become a rock in midfield for his club and a solid centre-half for England.

He has started all three games in Euro 2024 at the back and will be called upon by Southgate once again.

Danny Rose

Danny Rose debuted for England in the same year as the Slovakia game and made 29 appearances for his country.

At just 33, Rose has played the better football of his career with Tottenham and is currently without a club.

He most recently played for Watford after joining in a free transfer from Spurs in 2021 - but was dropped from the club in September 2022 and has yet to appear signing for another club since then.

With a plethora of loans during his career and a high of 11 goals and 29 assists across all competitions, it seems like Rose won't be gracing the football pitch anytime soon.

Jordan Henderson

While Henderson did not impress in this Slovakia game under Allardyce, he looked to be a favourite for Southgate to include in his midfield due to his performances for Liverpool.

He moved from Sunderland to Liverpool in 2011 and played over 500 times for the club, scoring 33 goals and assisting 59 times - lifting the Premier League and the Champions League, as well as two League Cups, one UEFA Super Cup, one Community Shield and one FIFA Club World Cup.

He has appeared 81 times for England and has not been included in the squad for Euro2024 - which is likely down to his form for Ajax, his current club.

Eric Dier

Eric Dier was a solid presence in the England squad, appearing 49 times and scoring three times for his country. However, he has not been included in this year's squad - despite playing for a major German club.

Dier was a solid defensive player for Tottenham after his transfer from Sporting Lisbon in 2014, making 365 Premier League appearances - scoring 13 goals and assisting 12 times but not securing any honours with the London club.

He then made a loan move to Bayern Munich at the beginning of this year and is joining the German club in the summer on a free transfer.

His last appearance for England came in a 3-0 win over Senegal in the 2022 World Cup, and he was also included in the European Qualifiers squad last year.

Raheem Sterling

Raheem Sterling has impressed in both the England squad and for his previous club, City, throughout Southgate's reign. He has appeared 82 times for England, scoring 20 goals and assisting 27 times. But he was not been included in the England squad for Euro 2024 following his move from City to Chelsea.

Sterling won four Premier League titles with City, five League Cups, one FA Cup and two Community Shields - but has failed to add to his honours after leaving in 2022. Sterling's most recent appearance for England came in the 2-1 loss to France in the quarter finals of the 2022 World Cup.

Wayne Rooney

Wayne Rooney was in the twilight of his England career at the time of Allardyce's brief stint as the national team coach.

He first debuted for his country in 2003 at just 17 and made 120 appearances for England, scoring 53 goals. Rooney retired in 2021, a whopping 19 years after his initial debut for Everton in 2002.

He was a solid option up front for his country for years, appearing in six international tournaments and reaching a quarter final on two occasions with England - in Euro 2004 and the 2006 World Cup.

Adam Lallana

Adam Lallana was a popular figure for Liverpool between 2014 and 2020 but failed to impress for his country following his debut in 2013. Lallana made 34 appearances for his country and scored just three goals from attacking midfield.

He just returned to Southampton - where he began his career - after leaving Liverpool for Brighton in 2020, transferring back to his boyhood club this summer.

Harry Kane

Harry Kane is a name that even the newest of football fans will be aware of, as he has become not only the top goalscorer for England but is also the country's captain.

Following his debut in 2015, Kane has scored 64 goals in 94 games and is the current frontman for England under Southgate.

Kane left his long-time club, Tottenham Hotspur, in 2023 and headed over to Bayern Munich in a £76m transfer last summer. In 559 appearances overall, Kane has scored 351 goals and assisted 89 times and will continue to lead England at Euro 2024 in Germany as they prepare to take on Slovakia on June 30.
