The Glazers and Sir Jim Ratcliffe are deliberating over who should become Manchester United's next manager.

Erik ten Hag is expected to be given the boot after Saturday's FA Cup final regardless of whether he masterminds a win over Premier League champions Manchester City, with Ratcliffe looking to install his own man to spearhead his would-be new-look United project.

But it's understood the Glazer family, who are still majority owners of the club despite reportedly handing over control of all football-related matters to new minority stake holder Ratcliffe, vetoed the English billionaire's first-choice, Graham Potter, due to his lack of experience in the Champions League.

Ratcliffe is a long-term admirer of Potter, who has been out of work since being sacked by Chelsea 13 months ago, and is believed to have pushed for him to replace Ten Hag this summer. But United's American owners flat-out rejected the proposal.

Potter was linked to the United job during the 2021/22 campaign following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's dismissal, and according to The Athletic, the Glazers, who were in charge of the managerial search back then, were unconvinced by the then-Brighton manager's credentials.

This is despite the fact Potter's Seagulls were in the midst of their finest top-flight campaign ever, eventually going on to seal a ninth-place finish. During his stint on the south coast the Englishman was lauded for both his tactical ingenuity and flexibility, as well as for significantly improving a squad without spending lavish amounts of cash.

Chelsea snapped him a few weeks into the 2022/23 season, and although his tenure at Stamford Bridge got off to a reasonable start, it quickly turned into a nightmare. The Blues ended up losing 22 games across the campaign and scored just 38 league goals, and Potter paid for it with his job.

The ill-fated spell put a serious dent in his previously-unblotted managerial reputation, though it's understood Ratcliffe isn't the only admirer unfazed by his Chelsea hell. The FA are reportedly considering Potter as a replacement for Gareth Southgate if the former Premier League defender decides to call it quits after the Euros this summer.

Should that happen, Southgate could become available having been linked with the Old Trafford job, with Ratcliffe purported to be a fan of his. Elsewhere, the likes of Thomas Tuchel and Roberto De Zerbi have also been linked with the United job, as has recently-departed Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino and Ipswich Town's Kieran McKenna, who used to coach at Old Trafford.
