England legend's son making his own way in cricket after signing pro deal

THE son of an England cricket legend is following in his father's footsteps having signed his first professional contract.

Archie Vaughan, 18, has been snapped up by Somerset on a deal that will last until 2026.

The top order batter and off-spinner has been part of Somerset's academy since 2020 and made his second XI debut in 2022.

He's the son of former Michael Vaughan, who captained England between 2003 and 2008.

The batter is most fondly remembered for leading England to Ashes glory In 2005.

Now Archie is hoping to emulate his father's success in the game.

He has some big shoes to fill, with his father playing in 82 tests, 86 ODIs and two T20s for his country.

Archie spoke of his delight after being unveiled as a Somerset player today.

He said: "It's something that I've worked extremely hard for and it's something that I've strived for since I was a kid.

"So to get the opportunity for a club where I've really enjoyed myself over the last few years is an honour."

Somerset director of cricket Andy Hurry said: "Archie is a young man with a bright future ahead of him. 

"Since joining the academy he has demonstrated a genuine and strong desire to work incredibly hard and improve every facet of his game.

"We are really looking forward to helping him develop and grow both his game and his understanding of the professional game."

Reacting to the news that Archie had signed for Somerset on X, Michael Vaughan quote posted an image of his son as a kid and wrote: "Clearly gets his hair from me."

Archie is not the only son of the 2005 England legends making a name for himself.

Freddie Flintoff's sons, Rocky and Corey both play for Lancashire's Second XI - with Rocky scoring a century last month to alert the world to his budding talent.
