Pep Guardiola has admitted Jack Grealish has “struggled” this season.
Grealish, 28, is sweating on his England place in the Euros squad after failing to start a match in the final month of the season. Manchester City star Grealish was an unused substitute for the FA Cup final and played just ten minutes in the whole of May since his last start at Nottingham Forest on April 28.
Grealish was pictured last week leaving a nightclub in the early hours after celebrating City’s title success following their victory against West Ham.
England forward Grealish celebrated long and hard last summer after City’s Treble win and this season has been plagued by injuries and has often struggled to live up to last season’s standards on the pitch.
City boss Guardiola insists that £100m man Grealish will be back to his best next term after facing new competition in Jeremy Doku for a place on the left wing.
Premier League odds and betting tipsGuardiola said: “He will be back. He’s struggled this season. Jeremy has made an incredible step forward as everyone has seen in the last games. But Jack will be back at the level of last season – I’m pretty sure.”
Grealish was named in England’s 33-man training squad for the Euros and will now get an extra week off before joining up at St George’s Park.
DON'T SCRAP REPLAYS!
But England boss Gareth Southgate will have to trim down the squad to 26 and there is huge competition for forward places. Jarrod Bowen, Bukayo Saka, Phil Foden, Anthony Gordon and Cole Palmer are among those competing for places in the wide areas.
Grealish’s lack of game time and match sharpness is unlikely to help his cause even if Southgate did take him to the last World Cup and the City winger has 35 caps and tournament experience.
