Scottie Scheffler wore a sombre expression on his face as the PGA Tour held a moment of silence during the final day of the Charles Schwab Challenge.

The three-minute pause, which is traditionally meant to honour the men and women who have lost their lives while serving in the U.S. military, additionally provided a moment to remember Grayson Murray. On Saturday, it was announced that the two-time PGA Tour winner tragically passed away at 30 years old - less than 24 hours after withdrawing from the second round at Colonial Country Club.

“There’s a bit of a tradition here over Memorial Day Weekend at the Colonial, and that is a moment of silence on this special American holiday weekend,” CBS broadcaster Jim Nantz said. “Let’s be honest, on this day it has dual purpose.”

As several naval helicopters flew overhead during the moment of silence, Scheffler rubbed his eyes and appeared to grow emotional. One day prior, the world No. 1 offered his condolences to Murray’s family during this incredibly difficult time.

“Obviously, the news hasn’t really sunk in quite yet, but I’m thinking about his family and praying hard for all of them,” Scheffler said. “I can’t imagine how difficult of a time this is. I got to know Grayson a bit better over the last six months or so. There’s not really a way to put into words how sad and tragic it is, but I’m thinking about his family.”

In a statement released through the PGA Tour on Sunday, Murray’s parents confirmed that he had taken his own life. “We have spent the last 24 hours trying to come to terms with the fact that our son is gone,” Eric and Terry Murray wrote. “It’s surreal that we not only have to admit it to ourselves, but that we also have to acknowledge it to the world. It’s a nightmare.

“We would like to thank the PGA Tour and the entire world of golf for the outpouring of support. Life wasn’t always easy for Grayson, and although he took his own life, we know he rests peacefully now.”

In honour of Murray, several PGA Tour players and caddies donned black and red ribbons during the final round of the Charles Schwab Challenge. Per Heavy.com, the pins paid homage to Murray’s fandom of the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes.

“The Murray family has requested that players and caddies wear black or red ribbons as a show of support for Grayson during today’s final round of the Charles Schwab Challenge,” wrote the PGA Tour in a note placed next to a bucket of pins. “Grayson wore red and black on PGA Tour Sundays as a tribute for being a longtime fan of the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes.”

The Korn Ferry Tour additionally held a moment of silence for Murray before beginning the final round of the Visit Knoxville Open. The American won three titles on the circuit before joining the PGA Tour, where he won the Barbasol Championship in 2017 and the Sony Open in January.
