Edu has admitted Arsenal have to be patient in the summer transfer window and cannot be signing players for the "sake" of it as they prepare to do some business.

The Gunners are looking to improve their squad after agonisingly missing out on the Premier League title for the second successive season. Mikel Arteta's side were still firmly in the race going into the final day of the campaign but ended up finishing second, two points behind winners Manchester City.

Unlike the 2022/23 season, Arsenal had a much better go at winning the title this time around and were unfortunate to come up against an unstoppable City, who had won their last nine league matches. In an attempt to try and win the title next term, the Gunners are hopeful of strengthening their ranks.

A new centre forward has been touted with Alexander Isak and Victor Gyokeres among those linked. But Edu has called for patience from supporters as he goes in search to acquire players who represent their first-choice options.

When asked about their transfer plans, Edu said: "You can’t sign for the sake of signing. This has to be a process that takes weeks and weeks.

"On my table, I have reports with over 180 pages of a player. It is really detailed. Physical, technical, mental profile – if you have experience of Premier League, if you will be able to adapt. It has it all.

"We analyse our shortcomings, where we can improve, where we can invest and from there we go in search of this new name. What I am going to do now, we have been discussing since January. It is not my decision or Mikel. It’s from a whole group."

After their victory over Everton on the last day of the Premier League season, Arteta hinted that the Gunners will do more business this summer having been asked about taking them to the next level. He said: "It’s the only way, so now we are sitting there and they took it away from us.

"It is the second season so there’s only one way to do it, you have to be more determined, you have to be more ambitious, you need to have a lot of courage and push every limit and everything that we have, because that’s the next step."

When asked about the plans for the summer, he said: "Rest, have a beautiful holiday - that’s what we need first, because everybody has put every single drop of energy and passion that we had and now we need to rest. While we decompress, and rest and think we will have to start to think with more clarity."
