When Princess Kate and Prince William first started dating, they were simply undergraduates at the University of St. Andrews getting to know one another - a world away from the realities of being the future King and Queen.

Over the course of the next decade, their long-term relationship had its ups and downs, with the pair even briefly breaking up before swiftly reconciling.

The length of their relationship led to Kate earning the unflattering nickname 'Waity Katy' as speculation grew on when the couple would settle down and tie the knot. When the pair finally announced their engagement in 2010, even King Charles - then Prince of Wales - made a pretty cheeky remark alluding to the lengthy courtship.

The pair got engaged after William popped the question during a romantic holiday to Kenya, but the news wasn't made public until a few weeks later. In a statement Charles was said to be "delighted" to announce the happy news, and that "Prince William has informed The Queen and other close members of his family. Prince William has also sought the permission of Miss Middleton's father."

As the news was made public, Charles was visiting Poundberry - an entirely new town built decades ago on land owned by the Duchy of Cornwall and was a passion project of his.

He chatted with well-wishers about the announcement, noting that he was absolutely "thrilled" Kate would be joining the Royal Family officially, and poking a little fun at his son and soon to be daughter in law and how long it had taken them to get to the next level of their relationship, joking: "They've been practicing for long enough."

In an interview to mark their engagement with ITV's Tom Bradby, William explained why he had chosen to propose at that stage. "It was about three weeks ago on holiday in Kenya. We had a little private time away together with some friends and I just decided that it was the right time really.

"We had been talking about marriage for a while so it wasn't a massively big surprise. I took her up somewhere nice in Kenya and I proposed." He also noted that "I'd been planning it for a while but as any guy out there will know it takes a certain amount of motivation to get yourself going", and Kate said that the occasion was "very romantic"
