A devastated dog owner is in danger of losing her home as she refuses to give up searching for her stolen pet called Piglet.
The tiny Chihuahua vanished after a burglary on a canal boat in Harefield, Uxbridge back in March. But Piglet's owner is refusing to go back to her home in Derbyshire and has been walking hundreds of miles in search of the missing pet. Mellie Clements, 54, had been staying on the canal boat for a few days when her two year old terrified dog escaped during the raid, just as she visited the dentist.
"I haven’t been home since he went missing because I haven’t got a home without him,” the cook said, in floods of tears. It is believed Piglet has been picked up by a stranger who won't give him back after an anonymous call was placed claiming the dog was ‘safe and well’. The police have been informed and are investigating.
Mellie, who lives 130 miles away in Belper in Derbyshire, is now so distraught, she’s refusing to go back to work and home until she finds her beloved pet. For more than 60 days the cook has been sleeping in her car, to carry on the search for her “placid” and “playful” pet.“I’ve got two jobs and no savings, so while I’m searching I haven’t got the money to pay the rent," she said.
“My car is my home now but I don’t care, I just want Piglet back. The people who find Piglet would be my hero - if they got him back. I just want my dog and I home.” She said the police have given her a crime number and are looking out for him. But meanwhile I’m all on my own,” she said, saying that twice someone had tried to break into her car as she slept in it. I’ve even been terrified twice when someone tried to get in my car at 3am. I’m having to find different places to park at night.”
University of Idaho murder suspect's parents speak out following son's arrestSince Piglet went missing she says she's walked hundreds of miles searching. “For the first three days after Piglet went missing I think I walked 103 miles. I walk up and down miles and miles up the canal path all the time," she said.
Karen Harding from DogLost, who is trying to help track down Piglet, says they are “absolutely desperate” to help Mellie describing it as one of their "hardest cases" to date. “She’s literally not going home to Derbyshire without him. Mel had always been terrified of dentists and so made a four hour trip to a trusted one in Watford from her home in Derbyshire.
“She arranged to stay with a friend for two days on his barge on the Grand Union Canal near Harefield with her little male Chihuahua, Piglet.” But when she returned from the dentists “she found, to her horror”, the barge doors smashed open. “Piglet was missing and when her friend returned a little while later it turned out that his electric scooter had been stolen.
“She’s literally spent every day and night since March 29th postering and talking to people, searching everywhere. She is always so tearful - he is her life Piglet is a pretty and sweet natured dog and we do think he’s been found and kept. There is a substantial Finders Fee on offer for information leading to the safe return of Piglet - they will collect from anywhere.”
