Three adults and a child have been injured in a terrifying drive-by shooting near a restaurant in Hackney.

Metropolitan Police said the child is in a serious condition and that they are awaiting updates on the condition of the adults after the shooting on Kingsland High Street. The four were taken to an east London hospital with “gunshot injuries” after emergency services were called to the scene at around 9.20pm on Wednesday with specialist firearms officers attending.

Kingsland Road remains completely shut this morning with three empty red double decker buses stopped at the police cordon just 30 yards away from the site of the shooting at the Evin restaurant . Stunned local residents were forced to walk around the police tapes to reach work.

Outside the DNA cafe bar Michael Warren, 37, said: “Everyone is really shocked at what happened. I live round the corner but didn’t hear any of the shootings. But I heard the sirens last night and when I came round there were already a lot of police here. It’s a very busy road but this happening here is unbelievable.”

The police said no arrests have yet been made with an investigation underway into what happened. A spokesperson said: "Police were called at about 21:20hrs on Wednesday, 29 May to reports of a shooting near a restaurant in Kingsland High Street, E8. Officers, including specialist firearms officers, and London Ambulance Service attended.

"Three adults and a child were found with gunshot injuries at the scene. They were all taken to an east London hospital. The child remains in a serious condition and we await further details of the other victims' conditions. Officers are working to establish the circumstances of this incident. No arrests have been made at this time."

Deputy assistant commissioner Matt Ward said: “We know Londoners will be shocked by what has taken place tonight. Our thoughts go to all those affected. Fast-moving enquiries are underway and we will update as soon as we can. If anyone has any information, please contact us.”

Eyewitnesses claim that they saw a motorbike turn up and fire bullets in the direction of diners before heading off with one person saying that the restaurant was “busier than normal”.

He told the Hackney Gazette: “There was a big group having dinner in the rear. I couldn't get my usual table so got one close to the front window. The big group paid up and left and shortly afterwards that's when the loud bangs - which were obviously gunshots - happened.”

At that point people dived to the ground and under tables in “chaotic” scenes. The witness then said he saw injured people and he used his coat to stop the bleeding of one leg wound. “I'd say it was around 10 to 15 minutes when the emergency services arrived. Police first, then NHS staff. They were very efficient,” he added.

A woman who was in Nando’s says she also saw a motorcyclist. “At first everyone didn't think it was [a shooting], it sounded like a car not working, but we were in Nando's and we just saw people running past” she said. “Everyone stepped out to look and we could see loads of people surrounding that shop. The police took ages to come and prior to that we saw the motorcyclist. He went around Nando's on that road. We kind of just wanted to get out of there.”

A woman was killed and a man and adolescent boy were injured in another Hackney shooting in December 2023. The 42-year-old woman died at the scene, and the 16-year-old boy and man were sent to the hospital. The incident took place in Lower Clapton, Hackney, on Vine Road, which is in a small housing complex.
