Prue Leith has jokingly revealed that her husband John Playfair wishes he had married Mary Berry instead.
The 84-year-old Great British Bake Off star, who has been a judge on the TV show since 2017 when she took over from Mary Berry, has returned for the second season of her spin-off The Great American Baking Show. Prue said that travelling across the Atlantic from her home in the Cotswolds gives her the opportunity to taste her favourite American dishes, including the apple pie, which she admitted she just cannot resist.
The judge said she believes baking shows are popular across the globe thanks to the competitive spirit of bakers, but she admitted she feels "genuine sadness" when someone has to leave after being eliminated. She said: "You're a good baker to have got through the auditions, so whoever goes it’s sad because you know they could have done much better."
In an interview with Luxury London, Prue said the winners are often clear by "how organised they are" and "how they react to being in unfamiliar circumstances, not in their own kitchen, and using an oven they’ve never seen before," adding: "Some people are just better at dealing with that pressure than others."
The South African restaurateur and broadcaster said while some dishes have different names in the UK and in the US, the skills are the same as "the influences in America are much the same as the influences in Britain." She also spoke about her judging partner, Paul Hollywood, saying they know each other's strengths and weaknesses as they have worked together for seven years.
Jermain Defoe sparks marriage split fear after spending Christmas away from wifePrue said watching Paul bake is like watching "poetry in motion" as she added: "I'm not a baker. I'm a cook. I have a really great set of taste buds that have been well trained from my chef school, which is still going after 50 years."
The chef, who has also run a Michelin-starred restaurant, said she was hired for her "tasting experience" rather than her baking - and added that while, she loves to bake, her husband sometimes jokes he should have married Mary Berry instead. She said: "I do love to bake, but my husband complains that our house is a cake-free zone. He says he should have married Mary Berry."
Last week, we reported that Prue and her husband love going on pub crawls in the Cotswolds on a Harley-Davidson. The pair make much mischief, setting off the whole area's car alarms to their delight. "He thinks it's hilarious and everybody panics," admitted Prue with an eye roll. "John is well known in the area. He's very gregarious. Everybody knows him – and that he's quite childish sometimes."
She added with a chuckle: "He realised that if he revs the motorbike at a certain pitch, it sets off everybody's car alarms. When I first rode on the back of it, I was really, indignant because I said, 'You know, this is noise pollution. This is unfair. You can't go driving through villages disturbing people with this horrible thing'."
However, John, 78, insisted the locals "love" the noise of the reverberating motor. "They do," concedes Prue, with an element of surprise. "There is something about a Harley that people just love the sound of it. It's safe to sit on because you can't turn over, so you don't have to wear a hat. It's like a Reliant Robin tricycle, and we go whizzing around the country.
"It's got a lovely leather seat, it's so lovely and comfortable, you can smell the newly mown grass as you go through. We pub crawl – I do the drinking, and he does the driving." Prue, mum to Tory MP Daniel Kruger and adopted daughter Li-Da, has noted that John's children refer to his trike as his "mobility scooter".
