Royal parents Kate and William take pointers for raising their three kids from their nanny, who is trained at Norland - the most prestigious childcare university in the world

Royal parents Prince William and Princess Kate have a strict rule for their children which they hope will "empower" them.

As senior royals, the couple have a series of strict protocols to live by, which they pass on to their three young children Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, nine, and Prince Louis, six. They have rolled out a number of rules when it comes to raising their brood, which show the influence of their nanny, who is trained at Norland - the most prestigious childcare university in the world. Norland-trained nanny and the co-host of The Sleep Mums podcast Sarah Carpenter revealed exactly how the highly-skilled nannies operate and what is expected of them.

Softly spoken

One of the main parts of a Norland nanny’s training is how to limit your emotional response to a child’s behaviour. Sarah told Hello!: "For a Norland Nanny, shouting at or raising our voice around our charges is completely banned and rightly so as it does not allow children to feel empowered or supported."

This is the same approach the Prince and Princess of Wales use with their own kids. Good Housekeeping previously reported that controlling the volume of someone’s voice is a strict rule in the Wales household. They also pause all communication when the youngsters’ raise their voices. The parents will also remove the kids from the situation when shouting ensues and they prefer to discuss any emotional topics on a "chat sofa". It’s an alternative to the naughty step, and allows kids the opportunity to unpack their emotions.

This word is banned

In the Netmums article, Sarah revealed there is one word which Norland nannies won’t use. "Silly" can only be used in a light-hearted context, like "let’s make a silly face". The nannies emphasise the action rather than the child when using a negative word.

Royal nanny Maria Teresa Turrion Borrallo

The royal trio are parented by Kate and Wills, and their Norland nanny Maria Teresa Turrion Borrallo, who joined the household in 2014 when they were still the Cambridges. She has been spotted at a number of historic events, including the wedding of Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank. Maria was seen riding in a car with Princess Charlotte, who was a bridesmaid.

At Charlotte’s christening in 2015, the nanny was seen helping the Princess of Wales with the two eldest children. She was also seen interacting with the late Queen. Royal commentator Victoria Murphy told ABC News: "The nannies are taught everything from defensive driving to security issues to how to care for a future king or queen."
