A man in his 50s has been arrested by the police after he threw two home-made firebombs at the Castle.

The police were notified of the incident just after one o’clock on Monday afternoon. They quickly got control of the man.

According to the head of communications at the Castle, Guri Varpe, one of the royal family was at the Castle when the firebombs were thrown.

It should not be about anyone in the crown prince’s family or the royal couple.

Operations leader at the scene, Anders Rønning, says that the man had several bottles of liquid on him when he was arrested

- These will now be investigated by the police’s bomb squad.

The person responsible is a Belarusian citizen and wanted in the Netherlands, according to the head of the crime watch, Ole Magnus Danielsen.

The police report at 7.55pm on Monday evening that investigations at and near the castle have been completed.

Said he had a bomb

It was a random passerby who contacted the police. The man, who has now been arrested, told him he had a bomb.

After this he rolled two molotov cocktails towards a door at the back of the Castle.

- The police were nearby, so when he threw the second firebomb we were able to arrest him immediately, says task leader Rønning.

According to the police, there were some flames on the outside of a wall at the back of the Castle, but that the fire was quickly extinguished.

- He is being questioned to find out more about the motive, the background to the incident and whether he was alone.

Rønning says it seems that there was little substance to the bomb threat.

- Sad

Lisa Nomeland from Kristiansand is on holiday in Oslo with her family.

- We were supposed to see the changing of the guard at the Garden. But there hasn’t been a change of guard yet, because it was postponed because of this.

When they arrived at the Castle, they saw the man being arrested by the police.

- We saw that there was a lot of smoke, says Nomeland.

Neither she nor her family thought it was particularly frightening.

- It is sad if someone wants to do something against the Palace and the royal family. I don’t know what the motive is, but it’s sad.

Tours postponed

Spokesperson for the Army and Garden, Brage Wiik-Hansen, says that Garden has not been involved in the incident itself.

- The area around the Castle is open to the public. Even if security is good, this is a place you should be able to go.

SAFE: The police and fire brigade say there is no danger to others.

When asked if this is a mistake on the Garden’s part, Wiik-Hansen replies that it is too early to say.

- For now, I do not have enough information. We must return to that.

The castle writes in an e-mail to NRK that the extent of the damage is currently unknown.

- The tours of the Castle will continue as soon as possible. The main release for Garden has been postponed, they write in the e-mail.

In addition to this, they refer to the police.
