A plane carrying 62 people has crashed in Brazil’s Sao Paulo state, local media reported.

Firefighters confirmed the plane fell in the city of Vinhedo, but did not offer more details.

Brazilian airline VoePass has said 58 passengers and four crew members were aboard a plane that crashed in Sao Paulo state.

Footage shows the plane spirally downwards with smoke coming out of what appears to be the fuselage.

Brazil’s TV GloboNews showed footage of a large area on fire and smoke coming out of an apparent plane fuselage.

Additional footage on GloboNews showed a plane drifting downward vertically, spiralling as it fell.

It is not immediately clear how many people have been killed.

A statement from the airline read: ‘Voepass has taken all measures to support those involved.

‘There is still no confirmation of how the accident occurred or the current situation of the people on board.’

At an event in southern Brazil, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva asked the crowd to stand and observe a minute of silence.

According to local outlet G1, the crash occurred 2pm local time.

TheNational Civil Aviation Agency (Anac) said the plane was a ATR-72-500 turboprop with 68 seats.

The aircraft can fly at a maximum of 10,000 feet at 510 km/h.
