A woman was stabbed to death after reports of a fight with a man in the car park of a train station in West Sussex.

Police were called to Station Way, in Crawley, West Sussex, at around 7.10am after an ‘altercation’.

After combing through the area, officers discovered the victim in a car park with multiple stab wounds.

She was treated by paramedics but there was nothing they could do to save her and she was declared dead at the scene.

A 26-year-old man from Crawley was arrested on suspicion of murder a short time later, Sussex Police said.

Officers detained him on Stephenson Road, about a mile away from Station Way. The man remains in police custody.

Superintendent Rachel Swinney confirmed that police are not hunting for anyone else in the investigation.

She said: ‘This is a tragic incident that has seen a young woman lose her life, and we are working hard to understand exactly what has happened.

‘Officers were able to swiftly bring a suspect into custody and we are not currently searching for anyone else.

‘There will now be an increased police presence in what is a busy area of Crawley as we carry out our enquiries.

‘I would urge anyone with any concerns to please speak to an officer at the scene.’

The woman has not been identified publicly and it is understood that the force is trying to contact her family.

Forensic officers were seen at the scene of the stabbing hours after she was found and there is increased police presence in the area.
