A man has died after a serious assault in east Bristol, police have said.

The victim, who had not been named by police, was stabbed by a man at about 5.40pm on Stapleton Road on Friday.

Avon and Somerset police officers in the area began administering first aid and called for backup.

The man received critical care from paramedics at the scene before being taken to Southmead hospital. He was pronounced dead later that evening.

Formal identification needs to be completed, and police said they were working to inform all of his family members as soon as possible.

A murder investigation has been launched and extensive searches of the east Bristol area were carried out on Friday night to locate the offender, with assistance from the National Police Air Service.

Arrest attempts are continuing.
