A man in his 70s died on a Jet2 plane forcing it to make an emergency landing.

The elderly man suffered a fatal medical episode on flight L676, from Tenerife to East Midlands Airport, which made the emergency landing at Santiago de Compostela airport on Friday evening.

The plane took off from Tenerife South airport at 3.06pm on Friday, according to Flightradar24.

But an emergency was then declared, forcing the plane to make the landing, according to local outlet Diario de Avisos.

Despite treatment, the man died when the plane arrived on the runway in Santiago.

Jet2 has been approached for comment by Metro.

Diario de Avisos reported: ‘A flight on route from Tenerife South to Nottingham was been diverted on Friday afternoon to Santiago-Rosalía de Castro Airport due to the illness of a passenger, who eventually died.

‘The flight crew reported they had a passenger with serious medical problems on board and need to be urgently diverted to the Compostela airport.

‘An ambulance from the Galician Health Emergency Service-061 was sent to the terminal in the Galician capital, whose medical staff confirmed the death of a man in his 70s.’
