The new campaign will add to the whopping £1.4million our readers have already given for stricken Turkey and Syria.

Many of the 20,000 kebab shops across Britain will display a QR code so customers can donate the cost of a meaty treat while buying their own.

All cash will go to support the vital work of the Red Cross as the death toll from the huge 7.8 magnitude earthquake earlier this month now tops 50,000.

Donate a Doner is the brainchild of Ibrahim Dogus, 42, director of the Centre for Turkey Studies and the founder of today’s British Kebab Awards.

He was moved to act as many kebab shop entrepreneurs have strong links to Turkey.

Ibrahim told The Sun: “I was born in Elbistan, which is a Kurdish town in south east Turkey.

“My home town was the epicentre of the earthquake and is now destroyed.

“Thousands have died and tens of thousands are injured and made homeless.

"I’m the founder of the British Kebab Awards and keen to mobilise small business owners across the country to join our efforts to raise funds via the Donate a Doner campaign.

“In Britain, most of us know someone with a connection to Turkey or Syria.

“We have a large Kurdish, Turkish and Syrian community in the UK and the earthquakes have hit their homes and killed their loved ones.

“We have a proud record of showing solidarity with those in most need and this is the time to do so for the people of Turkey and Syria.

“We all love a doner kebab and what we are asking you to do is to continue to enjoy a doner kebab and donate a price of a doner to the British Red Cross via our campaign.”

Britons eat 1.3million doners a day, with the average price starting at £5.
