The prince and Meghan, 41, were told their security detail was being withdrawn on March 31, 2020 when they lived on Vancouver Island, Canada with young son Archie.

Their loss of armed guards came under the terms of Megxit, which saw them quit as working royals.

And Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also pulled the plug on added protection from the Royal Mounted Police amid taxpayer fury when the bill hit $1.7 million.

But in his bombshell memoir, Spare, Prince Harry, 38, says he was stunned when his head of security, named only as Lloyde, told him the news it was being pulled.

He writes that no-one suggested security for “Uncle Andrew” – embroiled in the Virginia Giufrre sex scandal – would be withdrawn.

And, in an apparent dig at Andrew, 62, he writes: “No one had so much as suggested that he lose his security.

"Whatever grievances people had against us, sex crimes weren’t on the list.”

Prince Harry said the threat level against Meghan and himself was as high as any royal, including the Queen.

And he writes that his father, then Prince Charles, refused to take his calls about the security row.

He then did speak to his brother, Prince William, who told him it was a government decision to pull the plug, according to the book.

And he tells of how Palace officials directed him to a security firm who quoted him £6 million per year to protect his family.

Harry – who now employs private security to guard his family at their home in Montecito, California – describes the situation as the “ultimate nightmare”.
