SUSPECTS are to be tested automatically for Class A drugs — if officers think they played a part in their crime.

The move is being brought in by Essex Police which says drug use is often linked to acts of violence, including domestic abuse and fights in pubs and clubs.

Chief Supt Simon Anslow said: “Cocaine is frequently used recreationally but it can inflame violence, particularly when combined with alcohol.

"And people arrested for violent offences often use cocaine and other Class A drugs.”

He said anyone brought into custody where drug use was suspected would have to take a saliva test.

“Tests will also be requested of anyone arrested in the county for theft, robbery and fraud because people often deal drugs or steal to fund their habit,” he added.
