Officers charged to the Thames & Kennet Marina, near Reading, at around 10.30am on Saturday following reports of a body in the water.

Specialist crews were called in to retrieve the woman who was then taken to the mortuary at nearby Royal Berkshire Hospital.

The woman has not formally been identified but her family have been informed.

Her death is being treated as unexplained.

A Thames Valley Police spokesman said: "A man was arrested in connection with the investigation but he has now been released with no further action to be taken.

"We would like to thank the local community for their patience and understanding while we investigate the circumstances.

"Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of the woman who has died."

The scene of the woman's death in the marina is secluded and well away from public areas.

A police cordon at the scene included a narrowboat moored up to a jetty.

No-one at the marina, on Henley Road, was willing to comment on the incident on Saturday and police increased the cordon to prevent others reaching the scene.

But one boat dweller, who refused to give his name, said: "This is a very tragic incident and it is not my place to say anything.

"The police with scenes of crime officers in their protective suits have been here all afternoon.

"The body of the woman involved was taken away in a private ambulance. It is very upsetting for everyone connected with the marina.
