DI Sunil 'Sunny' Khan (Sanjeev Bhaskar) and DCI Jess James Sinéad Keenan were brought in to solve a murder, after a woman's skeleton was found encased in cement in a London home.

After working out the human remains belonged to a woman called Precious, the duo set about trying to find her killer.

But after believing they had uncovered her murderer to be wealthy businessman Lord Tony Humet, it was revealed right at the end that they had got it wrong - but were none the wiser.

In fact Precious had killed herself, after accidently shooting her son Joe dead during a struggle with a gun.

Her mum Ebele helped to cover up deaths, by putting her daughter's body in a chimney.

To say viewers were confused by this ending is an understatement.

Fans immediately took to Twitter to share their thoughts, with one saying: "The ending has got me confused! #unforgotten."

While this one tweeted: "So Lord Tony didn't do it? #unforgotten."

Another commented: "Difficult to follow. Perhaps it wasn’t wise to continue post last Nicola Walker series. Convoluted. #Unforgotten."

This viewer said: "Too convoluted. Even for #Unforgotten Cared about storyline and characters in previous series. For me this series has lacked something."

Meanwhile, straight after the show ended ITV announced that Unforgotten will return for a sixth series.

Season six will follow DI Khan and DCI James as they investigate cold cases and unsolved crimes from the past, unravelling secrets and unearthing buried truths along the way.

Each of the new six episodes will be written again by Chris Lang.

Speaking to RadioTimes.com about writing the script for Unforgotten he said: “It's a unique show, in that it's got a format that is self-contained, but with a certain degree of serialised elements through the characters.

"It's incredibly difficult to sit down and create it from a blank page, so you need huge reserves of energy and enthusiasm to push you through creating six episodes.

“And it’s often very emotionally draining stories that you're telling as well, which require lots of research into really dark areas,”

Sinéad Keenan and Sanjeev Bhaskar will both reprise their roles as DI Sunil 'Sunny' Khan and DCI Jess James.

Their characters have had a complex on-screen relationship that began with tension and conflict, but ultimately developed into a positive dynamic, promising an exciting new partnership for fans to look forward to.

The rest of the line-up hasn't been announced at this time.

ITV have said further casting for the new series will be announced at the time of production.

Nicola Walker left Unforgotten at the end of season 4.
