ITV left viewers stunned after posting a fresh-faced retro snap of one of their legendary pundits in which they looked completely unrecognisable.

The broadcaster was covering yesterday’s bonkers FA Cup third round draw between Cardiff and Leeds United with the man in question working as commentator.

And before the clash they left both him and those tuning in shocked as they shared a photo of the now 60-year-old former striker as a teenager during his playing days.

It was, in fact, Rangers and Scotland icon Ally McCoist.

And even he admitted he was “spending a lot of money on spot cream” back when the snap was taken at the start of the eighties.

McCoist began his playing career in his homeland at St Johnstone, but after 22 goals in 57 league appearances, he earned a move south of the border.

Sunderland made him their then club-record signing for £400,000 in 1981 when he was just 19.

The much-loved Scot spent three years in the North East but he failed to replicate their scoring exploits, bagging just eight in 56 league games before Rangers swooped to bring him back to the Scottish Premiership in 1983.

And the rest, they say, was history.

He went on to become Rangers' all-time leading scorer with 355 strikers in a fifteen-year spell at the club which included ten league titles.

After a brief spell at Kilmarnock at the end of his career, McCoist returned to Ibrox as manager in 2011 following their relegation to the bottom tier.

He led them to two straight promotions before departing in 2014 to embark on his equally legendary pundit career.

He is now one of the most-popular commentators about and instantly recognisable to football fans across Britain.

But not many would have guessed who the fresh-faced young teen was decked out in a Sunderland top when ITV posted the picture.
