VETERAN Sun showbiz photographer Dave Hogan is officially an industry legend.

Known in the trade as Hogie, he has travelled the globe capturing images of everyone from the Rolling Stones and Tina Turner, to Madonna and Nelson Mandela.

Dave, who first started taking pictures at Butlin’s in Barry Island, South Wales, said: “It’s a huge honour to be the first recipient of the So.Co legend award. Every day I’m still so proud and grateful to have the opportunity to photograph the brightest and boldest names in music and entertainment. I’ve pinched myself every day, thinking, ‘I can’t believe this is work’.”

Rolling Stones frontman Sir Mick Jagger said: “Dave has been shooting the Stones live on tour for more than three decades. From our unforgettable gig in Cuba, and headlining Glastonbury in 2013, to most recently our London Hyde Park shows, his images have captured incredible moments.

“I’d like to congratulate him on his award.”

Here, Dave tells the stories behind some of his favourite photos for The Sun, including from LiveAid in 1984 which he rocked up to with 13 cameras.

BRITNEY AND MADONNA

This was at the MTV awards in New York in 2003 and we knew something was going to happen because there was a buzz.

Madonna walked down the runway with Britney and Christina Aguilera on either side.

Suddenly Madonna kissed Britney full on the lips. Then she turned the other way to kiss Christina.

I pressed the button but my camera would not work and missed the second kiss.

Everybody remembers the Britney kiss but no one remembers Christina was there, too.

TINA TURNER

I was invited to cover Tina’s tour in Brazil.

It was New Year’s Eve in Rio de Janeiro and it could have been the loneliest New Year ever but Tina took me under her wing and said ‘oh bring him along’ It was a magical New Year.

MICHAEL JACKSON

I first photographed Michael in 1982. In 1997 I was invited photograph him in Bremen, Germany.

Before I even got to Germany, Michael came in sniffed me and said ‘yes, you are on the tour.’

The next time I saw him he was in his quick-change dressing room where he had his red leather jacket, the hat and the glove.

One of his crew said ‘go on try them on’. For that moment I was Michael Jackson.

DAVID BOWIE

I took this picture in Edmonton in Canada on his 1983 Serious Moonlight tour.

We travelled across Canada by train because David didn’t like flying.

His supporting acts were The Tubes and Peter Gabriel.

AMY WINEHOUSE & MICK JAGGER

Amy performed the Temptations song ‘Ain’t too proud to beg’ with Jagger on the final day of the Isle of Wight Festival on June 10, 2007.

It didn’t seem an important photo at the time but Amy loved it.

It was such a tragedy to lose an artist of her calibre.

The Stones have been going since the 60s and they will perform with next generation of artists.

RITA ORA

I took this photo of Rita at Heaven nightclub in London. I thought ‘Oh my god, she looks amazing’.

I just loved this picture where she has turned her back.

It has an air of class and sexiness without being too rude.

THE SPICE GIRLS

I loved photographing the Spice Girls and they were so brilliant for the newspaper pictures, five very strong individual females and different picture editors all had their favourites, Posh, Sporty, Scary or Baby.

Ginger was my favourite, though Posh has been brilliant.

I did her engagement pictures and have been at their reunions.

FREDDIE MERCURY

Freddie Mercury holding up his crown was taken at Wembley Stadium in July 1986.

The Queen front man was the king of rock ‘n’ roll. Truly the greatest showman of all.
