The Met Office has issued a series of yellow weather warnings for wind and rain over the next three days as stormy conditions sweep in from the West.

A wind warning is in place on the northern coast of Scotland from this evening until 10am on Wednesday, while the North East, and most of Wales are subject to rain warnings this evening.

In these areas, forecasters say that flooding of homes and businesses is likely, while travel chaos is expected.

There is even the possibility of "interruption to power supplies and other services".

In the coming days, the South West and south west Wales are covered by similarly severe rain warnings from Wednesday evening and throughout Thursday.

Meanwhile, the Environment Agency has issued 101 flood alerts and 29 flood warnings, while there are 34 warnings and one alert in Wales and one warning and six alerts in Scotland.

This takes the total number of warnings and alerts to 166.

Areas likely to see flooding include the areas around the River Severn and the Wiltshire Dales.

It comes after thousands of homes were blacked out in the bad weather including almost 200 near Worcester, almost 130 in Exeter, Devon, and over 150 at Morecambe, Lancashire.

The Met warned that "persistent heavy rain may lead to some disruption", while spray and floods on roads have already caused delays.

Two motorways, the M4 and the M25, were hit by rush hour traffic jam chaos as the relentless rain hammered down this morning.

On the M25, queues nine miles long built up after a pile-up between junctions 8 and 9, the stretch between Reigate and Leatherhead.

On the M4 heading into London, long queues built up after a two-vehicle crash between junction 5 at Slough and junction 4B near Heathrow.
