A SMART meter engineer was shocked by what happened when he was put under a hypnotist’s spell - after he started singing Sweet Caroline in Chinese.

Ben Wright, 24, from Uddingston, admits he thought people who claimed to have been put in a deep sleep were faking it.

But he had no choice but to become a believer after he awoke to watch a video of himself singing.

The only problem is that he couldn’t remember a thing afterwards.

Ben, who was hypnotised by Stevie Cairns at the Whiskey Well pub in Hamilton, had other visitors in stitches as he suddenly stood up and belted out Neil Diamond’s classic hit in Chinese.

He said: “It was my first time at something like that and I’ve always been sceptical.

“The guy had a couple of boys up before me and I thought that surely it was fake.

“Then he did a test to see if I would ‘go under.'

"That's the last I remembered of it until I was shown the videos afterwards.”

Ben, whose girlfriend Monica McCrudden videoed his performance, added: “I didn’t know any Chinese apart from my order from the local, but turns out I’m fluent.

“It was strange to watch after it.

"I didn’t believe it was me until everyone was coming up to me after it.”
