The Met Gala is highly regarded as one of the most prestigious and exclusive fashion events, with the guest list overseen by Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour.

Yet at this year's event in New York, there was a surprise guest who tried their luck.

Whilst photographers waited for the final fashionista to arrive, a single cockroach stunned onlookers as it crawled along the red carpet.

Stealing the limelight ahead of Rihanna and beau A$AP Rocky, the pesky insect bolted down the carpet until it crossed paths with photographer Kevin Mazur.

He managed to snap a few close ups of the cockroach, before stomping on the intruder as it neared the famous stairs.

The cockroach, however, prevailed as it carried on walking in the spotlight.

But ultimately it met its demise before making it inside the Metropolitan Museum of Art., according to Variety.

The naughty cockroach may not be fully to blame for trying his luck at the Met Gala as the American variety of the bug is attracted to some alcoholic beverages, especially beer.

They are most likely attracted by the hops and sugar present in the drink, says Pest World.

The party crasher can run up to three miles per hour, hold its breath for 40 minutes and aren’t afraid of security as they can live for a week without a head.

Rhianna was almost upstaged by the gross incident just before her arrival, two hours later than other celebrity guests.

The pop star brought some drama as she arrived wearing a Valentino dress which was covered in fake flowers.

Her gown featured a long, sweeping train and was complete with a huge hood which completely engulfed her head.

She was accompanied by her partner A$AP Rocky who wore a white shirt, red kilt and a pair of baggy jeans.

Her outfit divided fans, with one saying: "Rihanna really made us wait all this time just for her to look like fancy whipped cream #MetGala."

Another said: "Did they look in the mirror before they left home? Rihanna looks like she got caught in a soft serve ice cream machine, and he looks like he just grabbed stuff out of the laundry hamper on his way by."

"Ey. Rihanna looks like an ice cream it’s giving avalanche … it’s a no from me," a third person agreed.

While Rihanna initially stepped out with her hood up, she removed her headdress and allowed her gown to unravel into an even longer train as she smiled for the cameras on the famous steps.

Her figure-hugging dress featured spaghetti straps and showed off her blossoming baby bump.

Rihanna is currently pregnant with her and Rocky's second child. The couple welcomed a baby boy back in May 2022, but are yet to reveal his name.
