Appliance expert says we're not cleaning our washing machines often enough

An expert has revealed how often we should be properly cleaning our washing machines and has given the key ingredient to get it sparkling.

We all use the handy appliance at least a couple of times a week, if not more for big families, so it's essential they are maintained well. Looking after a washing machine is something many of us neglect to do, however.

So, as spring cleaning season is well and truly be underway, one expert could have the answer to all your washing machine cleaning prayers.

He said: "We'd recommend deep cleaning your washing once a month to stop the build-up of mildew and dirt. Plus, this extra care and attention will definitely help prolong the life of your machine.

Explaining how to clean your appliance, Simon added: "Step one is to deep clean your washing machine tray, leaving it to soak in hot soapy water while you clean the inside drawer to stop any mildew growing."

Next, he explained how to clean the interior of your washing machine and shared that the best thing to use is just white vinegar which is a household staple.

"Next, spray white vinegar into the drum of your machine and give the bowl a clean with a cloth. A top tip here is to make sure you clean behind the seal too, to ensure you get rid of any build up," he said.

"Our third step is to thoroughly clean the inside and outside of both the machine itself and its door, making sure to get rid of any dirt and bacteria on the machine. Finally, put your washing machine back together and you’re done."
