THE DVLA has warned drivers that they must replace their licence at a certain age.

Failure to do so will mean drivers will no longer be legally allowed to drive.

The DVLA has warned drivers over 70 must renew their driving licence every three years or face fines.

If they don't do so, they will no longer be legally allowed to drive beyond their 70th birthday.

Plus, those who don't renew their document will be committing a serious offence.

Their licence and insurance will not be valid, they face a fine of up to £1,000 and even having their vehicle taken away.

But an expired licence doesn't mean drivers must stop driving for good; they just have to renew it.

The process is very simple - drivers must complete a D46P application form which the DVLA will send you 90 days before your 70th birthday.

Fortunately, you can also pick one up at your local post office.

The DVLA said on Twitter: "After you turn 70, you need to renew your licence every three years. It’s easy, quick and secure to do it online."

The online process is straight forward and the replacement should arrive in just a week.

To apply, you need a valid email address, your National Insurance Number, addresses of where you've lived for the last three years and a valid UK passport number.

The DVLA said they could drive while their licence is being renewed if they meet several conditions.

Drivers will need to have the permission of their doctor, have a previous valid licence, drive under the conditions of the previous licence, and their application has to be less than a year old.

Also, the licence can't be revoked or refused for medical reasons; the driver can't be currently disqualified or have been disqualified as a high-risk offender after the first of June 2013.
