BRITAIN is set to triple its land-based air defences with hundreds more troops trained to use anti-missile weapons.

Boosting the Royal Artillery is the Army’s top priority after learning lessons from the war in Ukraine.

Troops will use truck-mounted Sky Sabre missiles, Starstreak rockets and signal-­scrambling jammers to counter missiles and drones.

A senior officer told The Sun: “We need to rebalance to meet the threats we can see in Ukraine and threats potentially in the future.

“That means we have to restore some strength to the artillery, to electronic warfare and unmanned aerial systems.”

Commanders are currently battling “mad” Ministry of Defence plans to cut the Army.

It is already on track to shrink to 73,000 troops, its smallest size in 300 years — despite a Tory pledge not to cut the Armed Forces.

Army boss Gen Sir Patrick Sanders warned: “We are the generation that must prepare the army to fight in Europe again.”

The MoD said any changes would be revealed in its “updated Defence Command Paper” published next month.
